Cisco Firewall Technologies – My Latest Book

Cisco Firewall TechnologiesJust thought I would let you all know about the release of my latest book from Cisco Press.

This is the first “Short Cut” that I have done. These are like mini books that have a quick time to market so you can actually write about a current product.

This Short Cut covers firewall technologies from Cisco. The IOS Firewall, PIX, Firewall Services Module (FWSM) and Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) are all covered.

This is the info on the short cut:

Cisco Firewall Technologies provides you with a no-nonsense, easy-to-read guide to different types of firewall technologies along with information on how these technologies are represented in the Cisco® firewall product family. The main Cisco products covered are the IOS® Firewall, the PIX® Firewall, and the ASA. The majority of focus for the Short Cut will be on the ASA and emphasis will be placed upon the latest functionality released in version 7.2. The Short Cut also provides a walkthrough for configuring the ASA using the Adaptive Security Device Manager (ASDM), the GUI management and configuration tool provided with the ASA.

The Short Cut presents you with the background information and product knowledge to make qualified decisions about the type of firewall technology that best fits your working environment. This is a Cisco technology focused Short Cut, so the emphasis will be solely on Cisco firewall products.

Table of Contents:

Chapter 1: Firewall Technologies

Chapter 2: Cisco Firewall Technologies

Chapter 3: Advancements in the ASA

This is a great book (well I would say that) if you want a good overview of the basics of firewalling and how the Cisco product set relates to it.

The book can be purchased directly from the CiscoPress website by following THIS LINK.

    oooooh! oooooooh! I want!! 🙂

Nice blog! This may come in really handy, as I’m implementing all three types of firewalls (ASA, PIX, and IOS), all in different networks.

The ASA is truly a great product Cisco came out with, although, I’ve had NUMEROUS issues with the Trend Micro CSC module, as well as, issues with the Websense URL-SERVER technologies. It gets better with every version update, though.

All-in-all, I like where Cisco is going with the ASA.

    Cheers!

This looks like a really useful book. We’ve been using PIX 525’s for the last couple of years and have just begun to implement ASA 5510’s.

The ASDM is a big improvement on the PIX PDM, but it doesn’t hurt to use the command line to truly understand what is going on too.

    Regards

    James Holliday.
